Questions and Answers
Is the studio environment welcoming for beginners?
Absolutely! Our space is cosy and welcoming, run by open-minded folks who are excited to help musicians of all levels explore and develop their unique sound.
How do I book rehearsal session at UTD Studio?
As we’re usually in Flight Mode during recordings – best to drop us an email and ask for current availability. We recommend scheduling your sessions in advance to secure your preferred time.
What kind of lessons do you provide?
We offer bespoke lessons on Instruments, Hardware & Software as well as Songwriting (including song structure, instrument arrangement, melody composition, chord progressions, lyric writing) tailored to your individual needs & skill levels.
You'll find more details in the Lessons section.
Is learning an instrument worthwhile for someone who doesn’t necessarily want to become a professional musician?
Great question – absolutely, yes. Learning an instrument isn’t just fun and rewarding, it’s also incredibly beneficial for brain development. It’s a bit like learning a new language, but with the added challenge of developing motor skills at the same time.
It’s hard to think of any real downsides (unless you’re playing too loudly at night!), but there are plenty of advantages. One of my favourite quotes is from the brilliant teacher Shinichi Suzuki, who said: “We don’t teach music to produce musicians. We teach it to create a more noble person.”
In short, we offer the opportunity not to force anyone into a career, but because a fulfilled person is a happy person – and the world could do with more of both.
I want to record my song, but I have no experience & no idea how the process works. It’s a bit discouraging. What do you recommend?
First of all, be glad—you’ve found the right place. We’re here for you. Not to judge or test how good you are, but to help make your dream a reality. The best thing to do is send us an email explaining what kind of music you love, your song idea, and what you’d like to record—whether it’s an instrumental track, one or more instruments, or your vocals. We’ll read it carefully and let you know what steps to take next. It’s free of charge, so why not give it a go?
What should I bring to my first recording session?
First things first—get in touch to book your session. We’ll do our best to advise you. Once you’re booked in, just bring your instrument (if you have one), any music or material you’d like to work on, and an open mind ready for musical exploration. We’ll take care of the rest!
You'll find more details in the Recording section.
How long does it take to record vocals for a 4-minute song?
It depends on several factors. If there are no harmonies, backing vocals, layers, multiple takes, detailed direction or ad-libs, an experienced vocalist can finish in about an hour.
For a less-experienced singer—especially if it’s their first time recording or singing to a click—it could take most of the day.
If it’s your first session, we recommend booking at least three hours. Feel free to get in touch; we’ll happily talk it through with you. We don’t want you to overspend—our goal is to help you prepare, record efficiently and save money for your next track.
What equipment do you use for recording?
We use a blend of vintage and modern gear, from analogue and digital consoles to a fully weighted 81-key piano, guitar and bass amps, more than ten pro-grade microphones, a classic acoustic drum kit and a range of other instruments to meet your recording needs and deliver authentic, high-quality results.
Can I book a single session or do you offer package deals?
We offer single session bookings at our standard hourly rate, as well as Happy Packs and Bundles to suit your needs. Happy Packs give you a better hourly rate, while Bundles combine recording, editing, production, mixing, and mastering at a discounted price. Feel free to check them out!
I'm an experienced orchestra cellist and need to record my instrument for an audition. How long might it take?
As an experienced musician who’s comfortable playing with a conductor—and I assume with a click too—2 to 3 hours should be enough to record a piece up to 5 minutes long, choose the best takes, and do some light editing.
If you’d like the track to be produced to album-release quality, it would also need mixing and mastering. In that case, you might want to consider one of our Bundles, which includes time for recording, editing, production, and post-production. You can check them out via the link below.
If I buy a Bundle and manage to record my song faster, can I use the time I’ve saved for editing or mixing?
Yes! Definitely! If You can use the saved time however you like. We're all about win-win situations, so feel free to swap the hours to suit your needs.
Feel free to check our prices, Happy Packs and Bundles!
Can I get help with songwriting and composing?
Yes, absolutely! Our team is happy to assist with songwriting and composing as part of our bespoke lessons and sound sessions to help you develop your music creatively.
I can keep time and play to a click. I’d like to record one 4-minute track using your drum kit. What do you recommend?
You’re an experienced player and you’ll be using our drum kit, which makes mic setup, testing, and warm-up quicker. I’d recommend booking 3 hours at our standard rate. Once it’s recorded, you can book a production or post-production session. And if you're planning to record more in future, it might be worth checking out our 10-hour Drum Set Happy Pack.
Do you offer online mixing and mastering services?
Sure thing! You can send us a Dropbox or WeTransfer link to your tracks, and we’ll work on them and send back the finished product. Feel free to check out our Mixing/Mastering prices
I want to release an EP with 3 tracks, each around 4 minutes long. I’d like to record my own DW kit, my bass, guitar, your keyboard, and my vocals. Should I go for the standard rate?
Wow, that sounds like an awesome project—can’t wait to hear more and listen to your tracks!
To answer your question, you’ll get the best value from one of our EP Bundles. Since you’re planning to release an EP, you’ll need editing, production, mixing, and mastering—but probably not extra virtual instruments. I’d recommend our BRONZE EP Bundle and Mix/Master 20h HappyPack. If you finish some parts quicker, you’re welcome to use the saved time to extend another service within your Bundle.
Also, we run Happy Hours from time to time. If you book a Happy Pack or Bundle during one of them, the offers can be combined—so the total savings could be outrageously generous. To stay in the loop, subscribe to our newsletter and follow us on socials.
Can I bring my own instrument to the studio?
Yes! You are welcome to bring your own instruments to use during recording sessions.
Can I collaborate with other musicians at UTD Music Lab?
Absolutely! Our welcoming space encourages collaboration among musicians. You can meet others, share ideas, and even book joint sessions.
Do you provide online or remote music lessons?
Our songwriting and instrument lessons take place in person at our Studio, offering hands-on guidance and an immersive musical experience. If you'd prefer one-to-one online lessons for software or hardware, or need technical advice or support, feel free to get in touch. You’ll find all our lesson options at the link below.
What genres of music do you specialize in?
Our team is open-minded, and each of us is into something different—one loves Hip-Hop and Rap, another’s into Electronica and Dubstep, one’s all about hardcore like Rage Against The Machine, another’s into classic rock like Pink Floyd, King Crimson, and The Beatles, while someone else is passionate about symphonic music, classical, and jazz. We cater to a wide range of genres and love musical experimentation—so feel free to bring your own unique style.

We’ve taught people how to:
- Write lyrics,
- Sing and perform,
- Develop their unique ideas into song concepts and scripts.
We’ve also:
- Recorded their vocals or instruments,
- Produced the tracks,
- Handled the editing, mixing, and mastering.
Beyond that, we’ve:
- Helped them come up with ideas for music videos and recorded them,
- Organised their first concerts,
- Coached them before their performances and celebrated with them afterwards.
We can do the same for you. Let us help you bring your musical dreams to life.

The creative process is therapeutic:
In the age of ai, when some might assume there’s no need to learn or create because a machine can do it too, it’s more important than ever to recognise the value of human connection—meeting people who understand and respect your values truly matters. The creative process itself is therapeutic; it’s not just about what you make, but how you make it, who you make it with, and what it brings you. For creative people, that journey is essential for both body and soul. It’s a kind of therapy—something that leaves you feeling truly fulfilled.
Our Story:
Ever wondered how “Under The Drums” got its name? It all started when Casper needed a place to practise before a music tour across Europe and the US. The rehearsal spaces just weren’t cutting it—storing his own kit was pricey, and setting it up from scratch each week was a right faff. After a year of slogging through it, he realised he needed his own space. But finding somewhere in London where you can be creative and make a bit of noise? Easier said than done.
That’s when Marta, the lovely owner of “Espero” Photography Studio on Brick Lane, stepped in. She didn’t just point him in the right direction—she literally walked around with him, helping him scout out spots until they found Thames House Studios on Cable Street. Kamil, another photographer already based there, was an absolute star too, helping Casper secure the perfect space.
The kindness didn’t stop there. Casper’s good mate Krystian, who runs “Data Visuals” Studio, remembered he had an old drum kit tucked away in storage for the best part of a decade. They dug it out, gave it a proper clean, oiled the hardware, and brought it back to life. Once restored, it looked fantastic—and sounded even better. It was like the kit was saying, “Cheers for rescuing me!” That’s how our “Red Pearl” came to be—a proper gem of a drum set we’re dead proud of.
Not long after, our mutual friend Jacob, a cracking drummer, brought in his beautiful “DW” kit. Suddenly, we had three drum kits in our cosy studio—great for drums, not so great for fitting in actual people. So, being a bit of an IKEA tinkerer, we built a motorised lift to hoist the “Red Pearl” up overhead when it wasn’t in use, freeing up space below for a pianist, guitarist, or whoever needed it. One day, someone walked in, looked up, and said, “Wait—are we literally under the drums?” And just like that, the name stuck.
